Most people know All Roads for paving major highways and busy municipal roads. But every now and then, we get a parking lot project that comes in our preferred size.
Ironically, years ago, someone told All Roads President Rod Stephens that his company would amount to little more than a parking lot patching business. Eight years later—and after paving hundreds of kilometres of highways and municipal roads—he's happy to be proving that prediction right... in the best possible way.
"Most people see us working on major highways or large municipal road projects," says Stephens. "They probably assume that's all we do. But good paving is good paving, whether it's a highway, a subdivision, or a parking lot. Every project matters to us."
"We just happen to like the really big ones, like 3XL+ big," he adds with a chuckle.
And this one certainly qualifies.
At nearly 39,000 square metres, it is the largest parking lot All Roads has ever paved.
Superintendent Russell Johnston puts its size into perspective.
"If you stretched it out, it's roughly the equivalent of paving almost five kilometres of a two-lane municipal road that's eight metres wide," says Johnston. "With two paving crews working at times, we're on track to meet a very tight schedule and have everything completed by the first week of September."
For Asphalt Sales Manager and Estimator Tony Genovese, the project is about more than just its impressive scale.
"It's a great opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the team at Conwest," says Genovese. "I've worked with people at Conwest in different capacities for more than 25 years, so it's rewarding to show them firsthand what the All Roads team can deliver."
Once complete, two 50-millimetre asphalt lifts over a fine-graded base will transform an area roughly three streets wide and two streets deep into a smooth, durable surface built for years of heavy industrial traffic.
It's technically "just a parking lot" but it definitely earns its 3XL label.
